Princess and Scruffy book cover
A story made to be read aloud. A bright, gentle children’s book rooted in love, memory, and imagination.

The origin story

A love letter that became a children’s book.

Princess and Scruffy began as a love letter Sean O’Leary wrote to his girlfriend thirty-eight years ago. She later became his wife.

Decades later, when they were expecting their first grandchild, Sean began the self-publishing journey that would turn that private love letter into a storybook gift: something their grandchild could hold, hear, and grow up with.

The book became a way to say, in story form, how Grandpa and Meemaw met, fell in love, and carried that love forward.

Why it matters

Children remember the voices that read to them.

This is not only a book for children. It is a book for the adults who sit beside them: parents, guardians, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, librarians, daycare staff, nurses, and family friends.

Reading aloud creates rhythm, comfort, memory, and connection. A child may not remember every sentence, but they remember who made room for the story.

For every grown-up attached to a child

A story for laps, libraries, classrooms, and quiet corners.

Princess and Scruffy belongs wherever children are learning how stories feel: at home, at school, at the library, in daycare, during bedtime, in a reading circle, or in a waiting room where a gentle book can help the world feel smaller for a few minutes.

The illustrator

Hatice Bayramoglu brought the story to life.

Hatice Bayramoglu, a talented illustrator from Turkey, gave Princess and Scruffy its warmth, whimsy, softness, and storybook charm.

Her illustrations make the characters feel expressive, bright, gentle, and instantly lovable—the kind of visual world children can enter before they can fully explain why they like it.

As of the last time we spoke, Hatice had illustrated more than 220 children’s books, and that experience shows in the emotional clarity and inviting texture of the artwork.

Why children’s book authors should notice

The right illustrator does more than decorate a story.

For children’s book authors, Princess and Scruffy is also a reminder that illustration is not an afterthought. The artwork teaches tone before the first sentence is read aloud.

Emotion

Children read faces, colors, and posture before they read text. The art must carry feeling.

Memory

A strong visual world gives children something to recognize, revisit, and ask for again.

Trust

Parents, teachers, and librarians can feel when a book has been created with care.
